Week of Aug. 8th to 15th — Battlefield Update: 26 Settlements Liberated, Ukrainian Drones Outperform a U.S. Brigade, & Russia's Miltech Under Fire

Ukraine closed out its longest successful offensive of 2026, disabled four Russian warships in a single night, and struck a Roscosmos rocket plant nearly 900 km inside Russia. It also demonstrated something Washington must learn from: in a NATO exercise in Germany, Ukrainian drone operators dismantled an American armored brigade.

News this week reveals 26 settlements liberated by Ukraine’s Armed Forces in a new counteroffensive. [1]

Here is your weekly update on how Ukraine is leveraging superior strategy and tech to bankrupt Putin’s war machine and forge a realistic path to victory.

Oleksandrivka Offensive Unveiled

On August 12, President Zelensky announced the completion of a two-stage offensive in the Oleksandrivka sector running from January 29 through August. Ukrainian Air Assault Forces liberated 745 square kilometers and 26 villages across the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia regions, inflicting at least 9,550 Russian killed and 6,600 wounded. [1][2]

The Institute for the Study of War gave a more conservative figure of roughly 627 square kilometersand assessed the operation as proof Ukraine can still execute coordinated mechanized counterattacks after four years of attritional fighting. [3]

Ukrainian Innovation Outperforms Western Models

Ukrainian Drone Strategy Defeats US Forces

During the Combined Resolve exercise in Germany this spring, Ukrainian drone operators from the 412th Nemesis Regiment defeated roughly 3,500 U.S. troops, most from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division. [4] Ukrainian drones disabled American vehicles so quickly they had to be reintroduced as fresh units to keep the exercise running. [5] Ukrainian operators later switched sides to teach U.S. units how to employ unmanned systems offensively. [5]

NATO Reworks Eastern Flank Defense Strategy from Ukrainian Lessons:

NATO is now rebuilding eastern flank defense on the Ukrainian model, integrating drones, satellites, sensors, and strike systems into a single network from Finland to the Black Sea. [6] The adoption is already visible at unit level: Germany's 45th Armored Brigade in Lithuania has fitted its Leopard 2 tanks with anti-drone cages designed from Ukrainian combat experience. [6]

Strategic Unmanned Systems Partnership Act: Mandates DoD collaboration with Ukraine to co-produce battle-tested Ukrainian unmanned systems (like FPV and Magura naval drones) right here in the U.S.

Ukraine’s Patriot Shortfall

On August 13, Zelensky said Ukraine receives roughly 1% of the interceptors it needs and asked to purchase, not receive, 5% of the U.S. Patriot stockpile, enough to carry Ukraine through winter. [7] Washington has agreed to monthly deliveries, but at volumes below 2025, and U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker has ruled out licensed Ukrainian production of PAC-3 interceptors on export-control grounds. [8]

The cost is measurable: on August 6, Ukraine failed to intercept a single ballistic missile during a large-scale overnight attack. [9]

The Fast Tracking European Investment in Ukraine's Defense Act: Cuts bureaucratic red tape to allow NATO allies to instantly purchase and transfer high-volume U.S. munitions to Ukraine without drawn-out approvals.

Interception at Scale & Russia's Counter-Innovation

Ukraine's answer has been to build a cheaper layer beneath the Patriot.

In July, air defenses downed 5,142 strike drones and 216 missiles out of more than 9,000 launched, and neutralized over 48,000 tactical drones. [10] Interceptor drones from Ukrainian manufacturer General Cherry accounted for more than 16,000 aerial targets alone, including some 300 Shahed-class drones. [11]

The company supplies 200+ military units, produces at 100,000 drones per month, has partnered with France's Alta Ares on AI terminal guidance, and has been invited into the Pentagon's $1.1 billion Drone Dominance Program. [12][13]

Russia is adapting. Ukrainian intelligence reports Moscow now builds roughly 3,000 jet-powered Geran-4/5 drones monthly, exceeding Geran-2 output, specifically to shrink the reaction window that Ukraine's low-cost interceptors exploit. [14] Critically, Russia remains entirely dependent on Chinese turbojet engines at $35,000–$40,000 apiece, and a Chinese mesh-radio component recovered from a Geran-5 comes from a manufacturer still unsanctioned by the U.S., EU, U.K., and Ukraine. [14][15]

Longrange Miltech Strikes and Cyberwarfare

Aug. 8–9: Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces destroyed an S-400 launcher at Gelendzhik that had fired six missiles at Ukraine hours earlier, along with a Tor system, a Pantsir-S1, and two radar stations. [16]

Aug. 10–11: HUR's Cyber Corps disrupted the payment infrastructure of Wildberries, Russia's largest retailer, explicitly framed as amplifying the ongoing strike campaign that has destroyed 20 warehouses and roughly a third of the company's storage capacity since July 18, with losses estimated up to $11.9 billion. [17][18]

Aug. 12: A combined strike on Novorossiysk using Palianytsia drones, Neptune missiles, and naval drones damaged four Russian warships and halted operations at the Sheskharis oil terminal (700,000 barrels/day) and the port's grain terminal. [19][20]

Aug. 15: Ukrainian-made Flamingo cruise missiles struck the Progress Rocket Space Center in Samara - Russia's sole serial assembler of Soyuz-2 launch vehicles, some 900 km from the border - alongside the Savasleyka airfield hosting MiG-31K Kinzhal carriers and an oil facility at Ust-Luga. [21][22]

What Congress Can Do

Ukraine has asked to buy 5% of an existing U.S. stockpile while receiving 1% of need.

Russia's jet-drone escalation runs entirely through Chinese components that remain unsanctioned.

And a Ukrainian manufacturer producing 100,000 interceptors a month is now a U.S. defense-industrial asset, not a charity case.
