More than 1,600 days into the full-scale invasion, the front line is being shaped less by territory alone than by two very different answers to the same problem: how to sustain a long war. Russia is increasingly reaching abroad for manpower and leaning on ballistic weapons to exploit gaps in Ukrainian air defense. Ukraine, meanwhile, is betting on speed, precision, and homegrown technology to do more with less. The events of the past week make that divergence unusually clear.

Ukraine closed out its longest successful offensive of 2026, disabled four Russian warships in a single night, and struck a Roscosmos rocket plant nearly 900 km inside Russia. It also demonstrated something Washington must learn from: in a NATO exercise in Germany, Ukrainian drone operators dismantled an American armored brigade.
