New Jersey Special Election: What It Means for Ukraine

April 17, 2026

Democrat Analilia Mejia won Thursday's special election in New Jersey's 11th Congressional District, defeating Republican Joe Hathaway and securing the seat previously held by Governor Mikie Sherrill.

Mejia, a former head of the Working Families Alliance and Bernie Sanders's 2020 political director, emerged from a crowded February primary and ran on a platform of economic populism and opposition to the Trump administration's policies.

She was backed by Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Her victory keeps the seat in Democratic hands and adds to a growing string of Democratic wins heading into the 2026 midterm elections — further narrowing the Republican majority in the House.

What This Means for Ukraine

Mejia's win is significant beyond New Jersey. As a member of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party — which has historically been more skeptical of military spending and foreign aid — her arrival in Congress is worth watching closely for those who support the U.S. commitment to Ukraine.

Every vote in the House matters. With Republicans holding a thin majority, bipartisan support for Ukraine legislation remains essential. We urge Representative-elect Mejia to stand firmly with Ukraine and against Russian aggression — just as her constituents expect her to stand up for democratic values at home.

Now more than ever, Congress must hold the line.

Russia's war machine runs on oil revenue.
Help cut it off.

The End Russian Oil Windfalls Act (H.R. 8222) would terminate existing U.S. licenses that allow limited transactions involving Russian oil and impose stronger sanctions on Russian oil companies. Closing these loopholes reduces the revenue that fuels Russian aggression.

📢 Urge your Representative to support H.R. 8222:
