On April 23 at noon, the National Mall in Washington, D.C. will look different.
Twenty thousand teddy bears will be placed on the grass in front of the U.S. Capitol. Each one represents a Ukrainian child abducted by Russia.
Razom for Ukraine - one of the leading Ukrainian-American advocacy organizations - is organizing this installation in partnership with American Coalition for Ukraine to make visible what too many people still cannot see: the scale of what Russia has taken. Not territory. Not infrastructure. Children.
The Numbers Behind the Bears
According to Ukrainian government data, Russia has forcibly transferred tens of thousands of Ukrainian children to Russian territory since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Many have been placed in Russian families, Russian schools, and Russian re-education camps - separated from their parents, their language, and their identity. A March 2026 report by Yale University researchers found that Russian state energy companies Gazprom and Rosneft directly facilitated some of these transfers.
Twenty thousand bears. And that number only scratches the surface.
A Step Forward — And Miles Still to Go
On April 2, 2026, the White House announced that First Lady Melania Trump had facilitated the return of six Ukrainian children from Russia to their families in Ukraine - the fourth such reunification she has led. A seventh child is expected to follow later this month.
Every child who comes home matters. Every name behind every number matters.
But six is not twenty thousand. And the work of bringing them home cannot rest on individual acts of diplomacy alone. It requires law. It requires sustained political will. It requires Americans to demand it — from their senators, their representatives, and their government.
That is exactly what Razom for Ukraine is asking for on April 23.
Show Up. Help Bring Them Home.

If you are in Washington or nearby, be there. Walk among the bears. Understand what twenty thousand looks like when it is standing in front of you.
And if you cannot be there, act from wherever you are.
Peace cannot be built on the silence of stolen children. Their return is not a side issue - it is a condition.
Bring Kids Back.
