Trump Open to New Sanctions on Russia? Inside the G7's Unanimous Ukraine Pledge
President Trump has once again signaled that new sanctions against Russia may be on the table — reportedly considering the reinstatement of oil sanctions that Washington had previously suspended. Speaking ahead of the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, Trump said he had held good conversations with both President Zelensky and President Putin, and expressed a desire to see this war come to an end.
This signal from the U.S. president was followed by something even more significant: a joint G7 declaration, signed by all seven leaders, including Trump himself, laying out concrete commitments on both military support for Ukraine and economic pressure on Russia.
A surprisingly strong joint statement
The declaration states plainly that G7 leaders:
"stand united in our unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity."
For a summit where expectations had been modest, this level of explicit, written unity, backed by Washington, marks a notable moment.
More weapons, more air defense
Beyond the rhetoric, the G7 committed to increasing deliveries of air defense systems, additional interceptors, and long-range capabilities to Ukraine. Leaders also agreed to consider extending licenses that would allow Ukraine to expand its own domestic military production, strengthening its long-term defense capacity.
New sanctions, with President Trump's name attached
Most notably, the declaration commits G7 nations to "increase the pressure on the Russian war economy" and to "strengthen our sanctions, including those on the oil and gas sectors."
The text explicitly credits the recently reached U.S.-Iran agreement with creating the right conditions to move forward with these additional measures, directly tying Trump's diplomatic efforts on Iran to renewed momentum on Russia sanctions.
Why this matters now
President Trump's apparent openness to new sanctions, paired with his direct involvement in this G7 declaration, represents a meaningful shift.
French President Emmanuel Macron called the summit "a moment of strategic wake-up call," emphasizing that these commitments were backed by the United States alongside the rest of the G7. After periods of visible tension between Washington and its European allies over Ukraine policy, this level of alignment is significant, and worth reinforcing through continued legislative action.
The path forward
Statements of intent matter only if they translate into action. A U.S. president signaling openness to new sanctions is an opportunity that Congress should not let pass. Sustained, enforceable sanctions on Russia's oil and gas sectors remain one of the most effective tools available to limit the resources fueling this war and to bring Russia closer to a genuine, lasting peace.
