Through Her Eyes — Final Week in New York
Before the full-scale invasion, they were civilians. When Russia came, they made a choice - to serve, to fight, to document.
Six Ukrainian women.
Six different stories.
One war seen through their eyes.
This week marks the final week of Through Her Eyes, a powerful exhibition in New York showcasing the work of six Ukrainian women who documented their country's fight for freedom while living through it themselves.
The Project
Through Her Eyes. Future Fate Is Unknown is a documentary photography project and photo album featuring 76 photographs created by six Ukrainian women whose lives were transformed by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Before the war, they were civilians. Some were photographers, others journalists, volunteers, mothers, and professionals pursuing ordinary lives. When the invasion began, they stepped into extraordinary roles—serving as soldiers, medics, humanitarian workers, journalists, and defenders of their communities. Throughout these experiences, they continued to document the reality around them.
Their photographs capture moments rarely seen through traditional media: quiet acts of resilience, frontline experiences, displacement, loss, hope, and the everyday determination of people living through war. Together, these images form a unique visual record of modern Ukraine—one created not by outside observers, but by women whose lives became inseparable from the story they were documenting.
Published as a bilingual English-Ukrainian volume, Through Her Eyes. Future Fate Is Unknown preserves these stories for future generations while offering readers around the world an intimate perspective on Ukraine's ongoing struggle.
Why It Matters
Wars are often remembered through political decisions, military campaigns, and statistics. Yet history is also shaped by individual experiences—the moments, emotions, and human stories that can easily be lost with time.
Through Her Eyes preserves those stories.
The project highlights the critical role Ukrainian women have played throughout the war—not only as witnesses, but as defenders, leaders, caregivers, volunteers, and artists. Their photographs reveal a side of the conflict that is deeply personal while remaining historically significant.
At a time when global attention frequently shifts elsewhere, these images serve as a reminder that the war in Ukraine continues to affect millions of lives every day.
